Having a single minded focus is paramount if an athlete wants to compete professionally, or even competitively. It is easy for them to find energy and hard for them to be distracted by anything else because they know exactly what they want. They will not quit. The decision has been made and nothing is going to get in their way. 

Dedication trumps talent time and time again. It is not a secret. 

The mind can be the most powerful tool for an athlete. There are many ways to train the mind. Yes, train your mind. Visualization, meditation, breathing practice and many other forms of mindfulness practice will help in doing this.
